For this project, I was asked to take an existing object and recolor it.
My task was to use the original photo and recolor it with the given yarn colors.
They requested the following changes.
- Pink to Brown
- Dark Blue to Light Blue
- Purple to Red
- Cream to Yellow
With previous knowledge using masks in Photoshop, I was halfway there. Using tutorials online, I self taught a few different recoloring techniques.
The real challenge became recoloring to a specific hue. I later realized, the method I learned was unable to do this task.
After more tutorials, I found a new method that had more control over hues and values. I was able to pick up specific colorings from one image to recolor the next.
Although these colors matched, something about it was off. Using outside opinions, it was determined, the lighting had not been considered.
Studio Lit Yarn – Sunlit Object.
This was resolved by going into the problem colors – red and yellow – and toning down the brilliance. This minor change unified the colors as a whole.
By the end, my confidence to recolor in Photoshop increased significantly. I learn there are an abundance of ways to recolor, and found the one that works best for me. I came away with new understanding and confidence.
